Best Band of the 1990s

Who do you guys think was the best band that came out in the late 80s through the 90s? I’m gonna have to go with Metallica.

Nirvana anyone?

I agree they’re slightly overrated, but nevertheless, they were truly ground-breaking.

the fuckin truth

To be quite honest, I believe they’re the band of this decade as well. Nothing can top Kid A for me.

I would put them 2nd. Jeez, so many Radio Head freaks

i like HTTT better

damn the radiohead crew took over this thread
Nirvana was good and definately groundbreaking but if you are talking about the best group of musicians and best music I would definately go with Radiohead and NIN.

Its Led Zeppelin

I honestly can’t see the musical talent of NIN.

fuckin

Are you kidding me? Trent Reznor is one of the most innovative and talented musicians of our time. He is one of the first people to integrate electronic music into rock and it actually sound good. Without Nine Inch Nails we wouldnt have a lot of the music we have today.

I’ve listened to their music and it doesn’t sound as great as you tell it. Electronic music isn’t what I’d call musicianship, and saying it inspired much of today’s music isn’t saying much.
I disagree. Trent has done a fantastic job of marrying harsh industrial sounds with pop sensibilities (listen to ANY of his songs, they’re all written like pop songs). He is a musical genius. Although programming doesn’t necessarily take musical talent, what Trent has been able to do with his albums (The Fragile, for example) is nothing short of brilliant.

Still not as good as Radiohead, though.
songs today have good intros, its just that they cant keep it that way.

as for best band of the nineties, id say nirvana or wilco.

jeff tweedy really doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Every one of wilco’s albums is so radically different than the last, but they always have the wilco flavor. It’s really quite ingenious.
I’m gonna bring this in a different direction and say Primus. Still one of my favorites today. Janes Addiction should be way up on the list as well. Then you also have Faith No More and, can’t forget the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They Might Be Giants are always good. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Beck is another contender.

I’m just throwing out other options besides Wilco, Nirvana, Radiohead and NIN.

I never really liked NIN very much. I was more into Skinny Puppy, The Revolting Cocks and Pigface for my industrial itch.
I guess I never realized how many good bands there were in the 90s?

Fixed. Try Opeth for proof that brilliant new music is still being written and performed today.
Alice in Chains is another band who’s name needs to tossed in here.
it’s too bad the stone roses’ second album was sheisty, otherwise they’d easily be number one. Their self titled is easily top five albums of all time.

I would agree with Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers, definately two of the best bands of the nineties if not of all-time.
pearl jam for sure, or radiohead obviously. tool is up there.
NOFX

and dood who started thread. metallicas first album is from 83..not late 80’s

But they didn’t get "big" until late 80s early 90s. I’m sure many of these bands fucked around way before their peak success.

They definately deserve a mention, they had a unique sound that has strongly influenced alternative music.

the song "columbia" rules fucking ass
I’m going to have to say Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Wilco, or Pavement. You choose.

i like pavement, but their cd’s after crooked rain and slanted/enchanted are so so at best.

i think kill ’em all was big enough. but it makes sense they didnt get all that much respect until later albums since they were only like fucking 16/17 years old when they debuted.

Does it still count if they were good in the 90’s but crashed and burned on their way into the new millenium?

thats exactly it, 2 good albums in the 90’s then got infected by Y2K
During the 90’s my vote would have definately been Pearl Jam. In retrospect, and since albums release post 90’s (kid A, Amnesiac, Hail to the Thief) I’d have to say Radiohead. For music released during the 90’s though, Pearl Jam is the one.
Green Day is another band that needs to be mentioned that I dont think has. They have become a worldwide hit.

They recently did 2 concerts in Europe with 80K at each, not many bands can do that.

Red Hot Chili Peppers is another band that might not be the best but one of the better of the 90’s.
Without question Pearl Jam. They set the standard and I believe, aside from Coldplay and Radiohead, are the most recent GREAT BAND.

I dont know about Coldplay, they are good but I think their are other bands that would be considered great before they would.

Pearl Jam is a great band because they are solid in every instrument and their songwriting talents are unbelievable. It is too bad they havent produced much lately but I hear their new album is coming soon.

here is another vote for PanfuckinterA
Never understood the whole Pantera craze. My ex- in highschool was super in to them. I remember seeing the most vulgar behind the scenes movie with them…FREAKS!!

Great songs, great live band, some damn good musicians…

Far Beyond Driven debuted at #1 on the Billboard top 100
I don’t think any other metal band (Metallica maybe ) has done that.

The videos kick ass. I can’t wait for the last Dime-Vision to be relaesed.

yes

Yea, on 12/8/04

R.I.P Darrell
Soundgarden???? My all-time favorite band. Thier last two albums (superunknown and down on the upside) were perfect. Every song was great.

Also silverchair is one of my favorites from the 90’s. It weird, as popular as they were you hardly hear their music on the radio vs nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam, ect.
muse is there for me. but again the sound is very influenced by radiohead

my fav soundgarden was badmotorfinger, that album fuckin rocked

and silverchair rocked, that was my fav album for a long time
i dont think theres a bad soundgarden song…they’re were unreal

quoted for truth. TOOL is the best band musically.

rage against the machine, alice in chains are up there too

Green Day SUCKS BALLS now. Dookie and Nimrod was when they were actually good. now they suck and they need to disappear

"getting big" doesnt mean making better music…They had a huge underground following…they were plenty popular before "the black album"…and they were a much better band before it too…metallica can go and sue some more fans…fuck lars

To answer the original question….Guns n roses hit the scene in the late 80’s and blew up in the 90’s…best band ever…too bad they got sober

.
I never really liked Oasis, because I just thought they were "Wonderwall", but after the craze died out I listened to their whole album, and realized how good they really were.
I can’t believe no-one mentioned R.E.M.

Other great bands I think of (that wern’t mentioned) are
Counting Crows …
Tori Amos …
Marilyn Manson …
Dinosaur Jr…
New Kids on the Block… j/k

But in my opinion the best band of the 90’s was easily Radiohead…

Yes. RATM forver! Also, Soul Coughing yayay.
Hmm, it’s a difficult one. I’d have to consider Pavement, Neutral Milk Hotel and Radiohead, along with My Bloody Valentine (in particular for Loveless), Slint (for the definitive post-rock album Spiderland), Yo La Tengo and Built To Spill. Whilst I love Wilco, it would be hard for me to place them in the list given that YHF, for me their best album, isn’t a 90s release.

MBV, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Radiohead seconded.
i’d say Radiohead, as i’m a huge fan… but there is At The Drive in, Dismemberment Plan, etc. to consider.

radiohead is brilliant though.
Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Sonic Youth and Pearl Jam

And yeah, the best Soundgarden album is Badmotorfinger. I don
